Q: Do I have to paint Hardiplank siding?
A: Yes, Hardiplank lap siding must be painted or you may order many James Hardie products coated with the The ColorPlus™ Collection by James Hardie factory finishing and coloring system.

If painting, for best results use Hardiplank with our exclusive PrimePlus™ factory priming system along with one top coat of 100% acrylic paint. For specific recommendations, please refer to JH Technical Bulletin No. S-100 or contact the paint manufacturers for their specifications. Hardiplank with the PrimePlus™ system is required to be painted within 180 days of installation.

The ColorPlus Collection by James Hardie comes in 8 standard colors that result in a finished siding product that will not crack, chip or peel. The standard finishes are warranted for 15 years.

Q: How do I cut Hardiplank siding? How can I control the dust?
A: Score and snap with Hardie tungsten carbide sconing knife.

Electric and pneumatic shears: The Snapper Lite™ & Windshear™ are available from Pacific International Tool & Shear (800) 297-7487.

Circular saws with dust collection are available from Makita®. Call (800) 4MAKITA.

Airborne dust can be controlled by using and positioning a household box-type fan to blow dust in an opposite direction or by using either the Snapper Lite or Windshear.

As always when cutting building materials containing Silica, appropriate eye and dust protection should always be worn. For information on avoiding dust inhalation, please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet available wherever James Hardie fiber-cement products are sold.

Q: Do you require a weather-resistant barrier behind Hardiplank siding?
A: James Hardie as well as the Model Building Codes (UBC, Standard, etc.) require the use of a weather-resistant barrier. It is good building practice.
